Schalke 04’s Max Meyer celebrates a goal against Bayern Munich
Tottenham Hotspur found themselves linked with plenty of names this summer as Mauricio Pochettino aims to take the side the one step further they need to become title challengers.
One such name that crept into discussion was Schalke 04 midfielder Max Meyer.
It was reported by Bild in Germany that Spurs were ready to splash out £38 million on the young playmaker this summer.
It seemed a big price-tag for Daniel Levy to be paying but the 20-year-old has masses of talent so it seemed an understandable move from Spurs.

Nothing ever happened in regards to such a deal.
Now the player himself has spoken about the rumours, insisting he will not be departing Schalke ‘out the back door’.
He told Westfalischer Anzeiger:
“I will not leave the club through the back door I have said that I will not go this summer, I insist.
“I know that here there is a lot of potential, we have got good players, a good coach. We can achieve a lot and play a good role in the Bundesliga, the European competition is a realistic goal.”

Meyer has been with Schalke since the age of 14 so it is no surprise to see him so committed to the club.
Spurs and Schalke did business this summer, with Nabil Bentaleb heading to the club on loan. That could be seen as Levy and co putting the pieces in place on the chessboard for a checkmate attempt at signing Meyer come next summer.
But for the time being, Spurs will have to admire from afar this top young German international.
