Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to Inter Milan star Mauro Icardi.
Few Tottenham Hotspur fans would be surprised to see Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente leave North London this summer.
The two strikers cost a combined £30.5 million but have only managed three Premier League goals between them, in 43 games across the past two seasons.
Suffice to say that neither has proven to be an adequate back-up option for Harry Kane, but if Tottenham sign the latest man they’re linked to then maybe chairman Daniel Levy has learnt his lesson.
According to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport, Spurs are interested in signing Inter Milan hitman Mauro Icardi who, according to CIES, Football Observatory, is valued at around £80 million.
It must be noted that very few rumours during the transfer window materialise, but if this one does then it indicates that Levy has given up on taking shortcuts to trying to find a plan-b option up front and is now playing the percentages.
Icardi, who managed 28 goals in 33 Serie A outings for Inter, is clearly a level above both Janssen and Llorente and therefore is much more likely to be a big hit, and bringing him to North London would be a huge signal of intent by the Lilywhites.
It may not happen, and it’s certainly a lot of money to pay when times are supposed to be tough, given the imminent stadium move, but it’s perhaps time that Tottenham stop trying to find a plan-b option for Kane and focus on finding someone who can either compete with him or play alongside him in a two-pronged attack.
And if Icardi is successfully recruited then surely the penny would have finally dropped for Levy.
