The Spurs boss has acknowledged the 23-year-old’s quality but knows the club need to manage him appropriately.
Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino has warned that the club must be ‘careful’ with young midfielder Ryan Mason.
The 23-year-old featured – and scored – in Spurs’ 3-1 win over Championship leaders Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup last night.
But Pochettino is all too aware that the north London side can’t rush Mason’s development, nor over-use him at such an early stage in his career.
Indeed, while hailing Mason as a ‘great talent,’ Pochettino also warned that Tottenham need to manage him appropriately considering the injury problems he suffered last term.
“Ryan in the beginning of the pre-season was good,” the Spurs boss told reporters.
“The last season was difficult for him because he had some injuries but he is a great talent from the academy. We need to be careful with him.
“He played on Monday for the Under-21s at Sunderland and today he had the possibility to be in the squad.
“He showed his talent and I am happy for him because he deserved this performance and this goal today.”
Spurs travel to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday to face Arsenal in the day’s late kick-off, where Mason could be in with a chance of making the squad.
