Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has claimed that Tottenham still have an outside chance of bringing Mauricio Pochettino back to the club as he reportedly pushes for a move away from PSG.

Spurs were of course linked with a move for Pochettino last month, and while nothing came of that initial contact, this saga may not be over just yet.

Indeed, Castles says that Pochettino is still trying to force his way out of PSG.

What’s been said?

The journalist, alongside his co-host Ian McGarry, said that Pochettino’s situation is still up in the air.

“Duncan you have a sense based on your contacts and information that the Mauricio Pochettino return saga isn’t quite over, despite the fact PSG have said that he’ll be staying,” Ian McGarry said.

Castles then outlined the situation with Pochettino, PSG and Spurs.

“PSG have been very strong on this, Leonardo came out and said Pochettino was staying, and we told you that Pochettino tried to get the Real Madrid job and tried to get out of PSG because he hasn’t enjoyed it at the club. We’ve discussed the issues he’s had handling that squad of players,” Castles said.

“He was obviously open to talking to Tottenham, Tottenham briefed that they were open to bringing him back,” Castles said.

“It seemed that Paris Saint-Germain’s actions had cut that path off.

“What I’m being told is that Pochettino is continuing to put pressure on Paris Saint-Germain, to put pressure on the Qatari owners, to allow him to leave this summer, regardless of Leonardo exercising that option which has made it more expensive for him to get out.

“So there, you have least the potential that [Daniel] Levy can get the man back who he seems to regret having sacked.”

Got to try

If there’s even the smallest chance that Tottenham can get Pochettino back then they have to try.

The Argentine is a top-class coach who knows the club and the players well, and with other candidates turning Spurs down left, right and centre, there aren’t many better gaffers available.

Will Pochettino be able to come back to Spurs? Who knows, but it seems as though this remarkable turn of events isn’t out of the question just yet.
