Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has given a candid interview to the BBC this week, in which he discusses his incessant love for the game of football. He also speaks about his children in the piece. He states:

“What I try to do is to be there, for all that they need – unconditionally.

“I think it’s important to be there, they need to feel you are there…It is like our relationship with the players – it is always up to the players.

“Maybe the player wants to be close, if they need some help, if they need to share with you problems from outside or they need help on the pitch…

“It is about the character, the personality, and your son or my two sons are completely different. One is more close, another needs more distance, and you cannot push them because you create a problem. But they need to understand that you will be there for them.”

It was a wonderful insight into a man who is become a firm candidate for most popular Tottenham Hotspur manager of all time and one which sheds an interesting light on a key aspect of Pochettino’s management.

The Argentine has a young team, very young in fact. A lot of the players he uses could certainly be the same age as his own kids.

He clearly approaches coaching these players in the same way as he does with parenthood and it is definitely paying off.

He has improved the games of players like Harry Kane, Ben Davies and Heung Min-Son in ways they may have not thought possible. He has done so by showing faith in them as individuals, by giving them responsibility and letting them run with it. Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and now Davinson Sanchez are all clearly benefiting from the management style of Pochettino, who is raising these players as if they were his own.

It was the same situation at Southampton. He made Jay Rodriguez, Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana into incredibly talented players and it is this parent like style, with the respect that brings, which appears to have Pochettino and his young players marching to the same beat.

Tottenham fans will hope it continues for a long time into the future.
