Mauricio Pochettino has broken his post-World Cup silence with a reflective Instagram message that has done little to quiet the growing storm surrounding his USMNT future.
The USMNT entered this home World Cup carrying the suffocating weight of a nation’s expectations, only to crash out in a manner that no one anticipated.
After plenty of hype following the win over Paraguay, the defeat to Belgium has left American soccer looking less like a rising superpower and more like a total mess.
Ultimately, things fall on Mauricio Pochettino as the USMNT manager, but players like Christian Pulisic have taken a lot of criticism for their performances at the tournament.
But now the important thing is focusing on the future of U.S. Soccer, which starts with Pochettino’s future ahead of the Concacaf Nations League.
🤔 Should Pochettino stay as USA manager or come back to club football? And why?
He has been offered a contract extension to take him to the next World Cup…
Mauricio Pochettino thanks his USMNT staff and players on Instagram
Pochettino already touched on his future almost immediately after the defeat to Belgium.
“In the next weeks, we can start to talk if the federation wants to talk. Right now, it’s about resting a little bit, to think, have conversations with the federation to see what the decision is. I’m so happy. We’ve built a very good relationship; now is not a moment to talk about (my future).”
And he’s now followed that up with a message on his personal Instagram story that reads as follows:
“So proud to represent U.S. Soccer this summer.
“A massive thank you to the players, staff, families and fans for all your passion and hard work.”
Of course, we are all just speculating, but Mauricio Pochettino’s Instagram message reads more like a farewell than a standard tournament wrap-up.
By using reflective, past-tense gratitude to thank everyone for the opportunity, he has only added to the speculation surrounding his future with the USMNT.
