It was widely expected that Tottenham Hotspur would target a striker to act as cover for Harry Kane.
Mauricio Pochettino has told the London Evening Standard that he wants a striker ready to play first team football for Tottenham Hotspur if he goes into the market.
It has been widely expected that Spurs would sign a front man in January to act as cover for Harry Kane.
However, Pochettino says that he is on the hunt for a number nine who is capable of playing alongside Kane up front.
The Argentine boss said: “If you have two unbelievable strikers, then I am not stupid. Why not [play them together]?
“When you have good players, you can’t put them on the bench. The good players always need to be on the pitch.
“When I was at Southampton we played with three strikers in some games – Rickie Lambert, Dani Osvaldo and Jay Rodriguez.
“They pressed a lot, worked a lot. You can adapt your system or your philosophy to the players you have.”
If Tottenham do sign an out-and-out forward capable of playing in their starting line up, it may require a change of formation.
Pochettino has generally used a 4-2-3-1 system at Tottenham so far, which allows room for just one striker.
Kane also does have the credentials to play in a number 10 role, meaning that the new front man could have a leading role up-front, with the England international dropping slightly deeper.
Tottenham have been linked with a host of different strikers already, with West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino a long-term target – according to the London Evening Standard.
Spurs are yet to make a signing in the January transfer window.
