Tottenham Hotspur’s Erik Lamela and Heung-Min Son both wanted to take a penalty during their latest match against Manchester City.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has hinted on ESPN that Heung-Min Son could take his side’s next penalty.
Son was spotted in disagreement with Erik Lamela over who should take Spurs’ penalty in their match against Manchester City at the weekend.
Spurs were 2-0 up at the time, and Son tried to grab the ball off Lamela to take the spot kick.
In the end, Lamela stepped up to attempt to beat Claudio Bravo from 12 yards, but the Argentine winger failed to put the ball in the back of the net.
Pochettino has now suggested that Son could be next up to take a penalty, should Tottenham be awarded another spot kick.
“Lamela, Sonny, [Christian] Eriksen. … At the moment, it’s who feels better to shoot. Two players wanted to shoot. That’s always better than nobody wanting the ball. They decided to be brave,” he said.
“Maybe the next one if Son is on, and Lamela too, maybe he says ‘now you give me the ball.’ The only one who shoots can miss the penalty. If Sonny missed, not Lamela, we talk in the same way. There’s no issue.”
Lamela’s missed penalty did not come back to haunt Tottenham, as they still picked up an impressive 2-0 win over City.
Harry Kane is generally given the responsibility of taking Spurs’ penalties, but he is currently out injured.
Tottenham are currently the only team in the Premier League who are unbeaten this season, and they sit in second place in the table.
