Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has suggested to Football.London that midfielder Dele Alli can ‘get bored’ in training if it isn’t competitive enough.
Spurs once again faced North London rivals Arsenal on Wednesday night, returning to the Emirates Stadium just weeks after losing 4-2 to the Gunners in the Premier League.
It was the Carabao Cup this time, and Spurs served up a superb performance to claim a 2-0 win, with Son Heung-min racing away to score the opener in the first half.
Harry Kane then set up Alli to score an impudent chip over Petr Cech for number two, sealing a passage into the semi-finals for Pochettino’s men.
It was a fine performance from Alli, who has been hugely impressive of late having seen his opening to the season disrupted by injuries.
The 22-year-old has now scored 75 goals at club level in his career and continues to post frankly unbelievable numbers from midfield.
Now, Pochettino has praised Alli’s competitiveness, and even added that the midfielder gets bored easily in training if it isn’t competitive enough, calling him an ‘animal’.
“I think I explained before, Dele is very competitive,” said Pochettino. “He loves to compete. I explained to you that in easy situations he gets bored easily. In training he gets bored easily if you don’t put in opposition and you push him to compete, because he’s an animal, a competitive animal. When he feels so comfortable when he’s in a very competitive space and situation he always gives his best. Yes, that is a quality he has and you cannot buy that in the supermarket of course,” he added.
