Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers was out on loan last season.

Edin Dzeko #9 of Roma is pursued by Cameron Carter-Vickers #38 of Tottenham Hotspur during an International Champions Cup match at SDCCU Stadium on July 25, 2018 in San Diego, California.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has suggested to Football.London that Cameron Carter-Vickers is in his plans for the 2018-19 campaign.

Carter-Vickers, who spent last season on loan first at Sheffield United and then at Ipswich Town, has been linked with a move to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

The Telegraph claimed in June that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was looking to offer Josh Onomah and Carter-Vickers on loan to Championship club Villa to sign Jack Grealish.

The 20-year-old USA international defence recently told The London Evening Standard that he hopes to break into the Tottenham first team, and manager Pochettino’s recent comments suggest that the youngster – who earns £20,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – will be given the chance.

Pochettino told Football.London when asked if Carter-Vickers is going out on loan again this season: “I think for him it’s a great opportunity to show that we can trust in him.

“I think he’s more experienced than last season and of course he’s going well – two 90 minutes against Roma and Barcelona was very good experience.

“I hope that in the next game he can play a little bit too and be part of the squad. It’s important for him and for the club.”

Chance to impress

Pochettino’s comments do suggest that it is up to Carter-Vickers to show the Tottenham manager what he is capable of.

It is not going to be easy for the 20-year-old to break into the Spurs first team, but there is no doubt that the American defender has a lot of potential.

If the youngster trains hard and is able to step up when he gets the playing time, then he needs to take the chance.
