Tottenham Hotspur felt hard done by in their latest Premier League win.
Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that it was an unbelievable decision to book Son Heung-min during Tottenham’s win against Leicester on Sunday, in comments reported by Football London.
The controversial moment happened in the 16th minute at Wembley. Son went to ground following a challenge from Harry Maguire. The Foxes star was adamant that the forward had dived, and Michael Oliver decided to book the Spurs ace.
The decision appears to have divided fans on social media, with some slamming Son while others have criticised the official. What certainly did not help Oliver’s cause was the fact that he gave a very soft penalty in the second-half for Claude Puel’s men as James Maddison went down following a challenge from Jan Vertonghen.
And after the full-time whistle, Pochettino insisted that he was baffled by the two penalty decisions before seemingly mentioning September’s meeting with Liverpool when Son was denied a stoppage-time penalty by the same official when Spurs were 2-1 down.
“It was unbelievable, unbelievable. When you compare the situation with the penalty for Leicester, unbelievable,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“That’s what I said to Michael. Then you look at Liverpool and the last minute. Same referee. I’m more relaxed because we won. Do you think that we’re a team trying to cheat a referee? Come on, we’re one of the nicest teams on the pitch.”
Luckily for Spurs, they were able to put any frustration to the back of their mind and secure a superb 3-1 victory that leaves them five points off the Premier League summit.
But with ground still to make up if Tottenham want to secure the title, Pochettino may fear that the same number of key decisions going against them again in future could cost them the points that they perhaps cannot afford to miss out on over the remaining months of the season.
