Mauricio Pochettino has told Football London that Tottenham Hotspur’s issues largely stem from their failure to press as a team.

At their very best, Spurs harried sides into giving away possession cheaply with a relentless approach to winning the ball back.

In recent months Tottenham have been more restrained in their pressing game.

Spurs have tended to sit off teams more, which has given opposition sides a platform in games.

And Pochettino has suggested that he wants to find a way to get Tottenham back to rushing their opponents.

“I think when you assess, because that is our responsibility, in offensive situations, in possession percentages, I think we are better than last season,” he said.

“But after it’s about when you don’t have the ball, I think we need to be more consistent [here]. Because that is the problem – collectively we need to press better. We need to more tough out of possession.

“I was talking with some players … it’s like when you go with your friends to play 4v4 or 5v5. No-one wants to go in goal.

“So you say, come on, every five minutes we are going to rotate. You want to play with the ball. You don’t want to be chasing people, and running in behind. And maybe we lose this balance.

“That is, for me, the key point that we need to fix. That is the problem on the team.”

If Tottenham can become the high pressing side that they once were again, they could yet become a major threat in the Premie League.

Spurs may have started the season poorly, but there is still plenty of time left for them to achieve their aims this campaign.

Tottenham’s next match comes against Southampton, when Pochettino’s side will be looking to bounce back from their humiliating midweek exit from the League Cup.
