Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has opened up on his initial relationship with chairman Daniel Levy.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has told ESPN that he had ‘a difficult relationship’ with chairman Daniel Levy after making his move to White Hart Lane.
Having impressed with Southampton, Tottenham moved to land Pochettino as their new manager in the summer of 2014, luring the Argentinian to North London as Tim Sherwood’s successor.
Pochettino has gradually turned Tottenham from top four hopefuls into title contenders, with Spurs still pushing Chelsea for top spot this season.
His work with young players such as Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Harry Kane has turned Tottenham into one of the most exciting teams in the Premier League, whilst he’s also helped develop the likes of Danny Rose, Kyle Walker and Mousa Dembele – players he inherited who were blowing hot and cold at White Hart Lane.
Now one of the Premier League’s top managers, Pochettino is highly regarded around the world, with many fans concerned that he could be lured away from North London by a European superpower in the future.
For now though, Pochettino is focused on his work with Tottenham, and has opened up about the early stages of his relationship with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy in the stands
Levy has earned a reputation over the years as a hard negotiator in the transfer market and prudent when it comes to spending; an approach that may not always be to the liking of managers.
Pochettino has told ESPN that he and Levy had ‘a difficult relationship’ after his move to Spurs, but claims they now have a strong relationship, and credited him for the club’s progression in the last three years.
“We had a difficult relationship at the start but we built a strong one,” Pochettino said of Levy. “He deserves a lot of credit. Tottenham are growing up and if I am doing well, it is because he believed in me and brought me here,” he added.
