The Tottenham Hotspur stalwart sat out this afternoon’s defeat in the Premier League.
Mauricio Pochettino has revealed to Football London that he expects Jan Vertonghen to be fit for Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Ajax on Wednesday.
Vertonghen sat out Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth in the Premier League after suffering a head injury in the first leg of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final.
The Belgium centre-back tried to continue but looked visibly unsteady on the touchline after being replaced by Moussa Sissoko.
Donny van de Beek’s goal in North London gave the Dutch giants a potentially priceless away goal, but Pochettino expects Vertonghen to be available for the visit to his old stadium.
Pochettino told Football London after today’s defeat at the Vitality Stadium, when asked if the 32-year-old would be fit: “We’ll see, we hope yes. He was training well yesterday, I think he can be available.”
Having Vertonghen fit would be a big boost, but having Son Heung-min back could be a bigger one.
Spurs had a lack of cutting edge in the 1-0 home defeat earlier this week, but the return of the South Korean, who was suspended that night, might remedy that to some extent.
Sissoko was sensational after replacing Vertonghen in midweek, and a fully-fit version of him is likely to cause the Eredivisie side some serious problems.
