Tottenham Hotspur have started the new campaign in good form, and are still unbeaten.

Mauricio Pochettino has told the Daily Mirror that he had to have a tough early season meeting with his Tottenham Hotspur squad to ensure that they were over the disappointment of last season.

Spurs had pushed Leicester City for the title for much of the campaign, but they fell away at the end of the term and eventually slipped into third place.

A number of Tottenham’s players were also part of the England squad which were embarrassed at Euro 2016 by Iceland.

And Pochettino was eager to make sure that no hangover from last term remained heading into this season.

He said: “This was a very tough and very good meeting because it is important now to be focused on this season.

“The past is in the past and now, in the present, we have a lot of challenges we need to be focused on.

“If you lose a game you can say ‘Oh, it’s because we remember the past and we cannot change the chapter’. You can use it as an excuse but for me it is in the past and it is good to see the players forget the past because football is in the present, like life.”

If there were any doubts over whether Tottenham had recovered from last season, they were blown away by the Lilywhites’ display in their most recent outing.

Tottenham demolished Stoke City 4-0 at the Bet365 Stadium, to move into the top four.

Two goals from Heung Min-Son set Spurs on their way, before Dele Alli and Harry Kane rounded off the triumph.

Tottenham are next in action on Wednesday evening, when they start their Champions League campaign with a match against Monaco at Wembley.
