Mauricio Pochettino has told the Hampstead and Highgate newspaper that Tottenham Hotspur are ahead of schedule.

Spurs have come in for criticism for not winning silverware during Pochettino’s time in charge so far.

However, the Argentine boss insists that when he first came to the club, Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis were only expecting Tottenham to be competing for a top four spot.

He said: “We are victims of our own success because I think we are ahead in our project.

“I remind you that in my first meeting with Daniel [Levy] and Joe Lewis, the target was to arrive in the new stadium in four years and to create a team to have the possibility to fight for the top four, and in the second year [there] to play in the Champions League. Look, we are victims [of our success].

“I tried to explain this season, it’s not easy to accept being close, nearly touching and being disappointed, then near again and disappointed. But that is normal.”

Spurs have not only just become top four contenders during Pochettino’s time in charge, but they are genuine title challengers now.

Although Spurs have fallen short in the last three seasons, they have most certainly made vast progress under Pochettino.

Tottenham look likely to play Champions League football again next season, but they do still have some work to do.

Spurs need to be victorious in three of their last four matches to ensure they finish in the top half.

Tottenham are next in action this evening, when they take on Watford at Wembley.
