Mauricio Pochettino says it is too early to talk about a Tottenham title challenge

The Spurs boss is remaining grounded but admits that anything is possible.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has told BBC Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas that it is still too early to talk about a title challenge, but admitted that the victory over Manchester City has shown that anything is possible.

Spurs beat previously undefeated City 2-0 in their final game before the international break to close the gap at the top of the table to a single point and ensure that they remain as the only team yet to suffer defeat in the Premier League this season.

After finishing third last season, much has been made of whether Spurs can go one step further by maintaining a title challenge across the whole campaign this time around.

They had already started this season in fine form, and that win over City has had many fans and pundits talking of a first league title in over 50 years.

Pochettino has unsurprisingly moved to quash that talk, but he did admit that he feels as though anything is possible for his side after the superb win over Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Argentine told ex-Spurs midfielder Jenas for BBC Sport: “It is difficult, for me. I think it is too early. I think we are building a very nice project and a very nice team, and we are in a moment where we need to believe and show that we are capable of managing [to beat] big teams.

“I think that we need time. We are a younger squad but I think that if you play with the passion that we play and you show the quality that we showed against Manchester City, all is possible.

“I think it is too early, but I can understand our fans feeling proud and starting to see that maybe it is possible to achieve big things.”

Pochettino’s Spurs side is undoubtedly the best that White Hart Lane supporters have seen for some time, and represents the club’s best chance of silverware in years.

It will now be about managing expectations as much as keeping up form if they are to finally add to their trophy cabinet.
