Tottenham Hotspur fell just short in the Premier League title race last season.
Mauricio Pochettino has admitted to the Daily Mail that he has challenged his Tottenham Hotspur side to win the Premier League this season.
Spurs ran Leicester City close in the title race last term, but ultimately fell short after a poor end to the season.
Tottenham still finished in third and were left to reflect on a positive campaign, but Pochettino wants his side to go one better this year – even with the added demand of having to compete in the Champions League.
“The big challenge for us is to try to win the league – but to be realistic we need to try to keep our level. And improve a little bit,” the Argentine boss said.
“There is nothing for us to prove in the Champions League. But we need to be ambitious and focused and try to improve every season and keep our level.”
Tottenham kick off their Champions League campaign tomorrow, with a match against Monaco at Wembley.
Spurs have also been drawn alongside Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow, in a group which presents an opportunity for them to progress.
However, it appears that winning their first ever Premier League title remains the big priority for Tottenham – and it remains to be seen whether Pochettino’s team selection decisions in Europe will reflect this.
Tottenham invested in the summer to try to add depth to their squad, which would allow them to compete both domestically and in the Champions League.
When Tottenham do return to Premier League action, they will do so with a match against Sunderland at White Hart Lane at the weekend.
