The Tottenham Hotspur boss had worked with Shaw during his time as Southampton manager.

This week has seen plenty of reports linking Luke Shaw with an exit from Manchester United. The England international has struggled to win over manager Jose Mourinho since his return from a horror leg-break in September 2015.

One team who have been heavily linked with a move for the player is Tottenham Hotspur.

The North London club are managed by Mauricio Pochettino, who worked well with Shaw during their time together at Southampton.

But Spurs already have a first-choice left-back in Danny Rose, who has developed into a brilliant player at White Hart Lane.

He has also been linked with a move away from Spurs but if the pair both ended up at Tottenham, there is little doubt who would be the first-choice.

Back in March 2015 the Argentine was speaking about the pair, as many wondered who Roy Hodgson would pick in his England squad.

At that time, there was little doubt who Pochettino felt was the superior option, as reported by Goal:

“So far he [Rose] has been the best left-back this season. His performances have been great. But they are not my decisions, it’s always Roy Hodgson’s decision.

“It’s our job to compare our players with other players in the same position and we believe that Danny Rose has so far been the best English left-back.

“That’s overall what we believe. We know all the stats from players in the same position. It’s our stats, together with what we see as well.

“I think that Luke Shaw was the best English left-back last season because he was at the World Cup. He was maybe in the top three in the Premier League.”

There is therefore no doubt that Tottenham would not be signing Shaw as any form of replacement for their current starting left-back Rose.

Pochettino however may not be able to resist the urge to sign the player he helped mould into the £27 million signing United made in 2014.
