Spurs have switched between 3-4-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations so far this season, and have shown great tactical flexibility.

Tottenham have thrived while playing a three-man defence when all their key players were fit – with Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld providing a sturdy foundation.
However, since Vertonghen has been ruled out with injury, Spurs have looked slightly less secure at the back.
Pochettino switched to a flat back four against Sunderland in Tottenham’s most recent outing, but the Lilywhites were unable to pick up a victory at the Stadium of Light and were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw.

With Spurs desperate to get back to winning ways against Middlesbrough, Pochettino has a tactical decision to make.
And when asked whether he could line-up with a three man defence again, the Argentine boss suggested that he was considering playing with that system.
“It’s an option, we’ll see tomorrow,” Pochettino said.
“I never like to explain the day before to you but it’s an option to play three at the back or four.
“We have different players who can play the position.
“We have Kevin Wimmer and Ben Davies with Toby and Eric Dier.
“For me it’s not important the formation, it’s important how we develop our philosophy on the pitch.”
If Tottenham can beat Middlesbrough tomorrow, they could cut the gap to league leaders Chelsea down to six points.
