Tottenham Hotspur have suffered the blow of Jan Vertonghen getting injured.

Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that Tottenham Hotspur are not looking at signing Southampton defender Jose Fonte.

Fonte has been linked with a move away from the Saints this month, with West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion amongst the contenders to sign the Euro 2016 winner.

Tottenham have the best defensive record of any Premier League side this season, but with Jan Vertonghen ruled for a considerable amount of time with injury, there has been suggestions that Pochettino could look to bring in a new centre-back.

However, Pochettino insists that he is not on the hunt for new additions in the defensive department, as he is happy with his current options.

“It’s impossible to stop the rumours,” Pochettino said, when asked whether he had any interest in signing Fonte.

“I think there is nothing to comment. Only thing I can say is we are not looking to add players in that area.”

Fonte has seemingly become frustrated at Southampton, after losing his place as a permanent starter this term.

New Southampton boss Claude Puel has operated with a rotational policy, and Fonte has often been switched with Maya Yoshida.

The Portuguese international has proved to be a solid option at Premier League level, but Spurs will rely on the likes of Kevin Wimmer and Ben Davies to step in for Vertonghen in the coming weeks.
