Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino has provided an update on Victor Wanyama’s fitness.

Wanyama was a regular in his first season at Tottenham, but has been sidelined since August with a knee injury.

Prior reports suggested the Kenyan midfielder could be due back last month, but Pochettino has since told Football.London he is unable to specify a return date at this moment in time.

“He’s doing well, getting better every day. That is good,” said the Argentine. “Yesterday he was training alone, still not with the group, but with the sports scientist and physio. It was good. The reaction from his knee was good.

“He’s getting better every day. We’ll see if he can be available as soon as possible to help the team.”

When asked if Wanyama would be back before the end of the year, Pochettino added: “I don’t know. I cannot guess. It’s like [Erik] Lamela, now he needs to feel his knee is safe and good and ready to step up again.”

Lucky for Tottenham, they have fared well in Wanyama’s absence, with Harry Winks in particular stepping up to the plate.

Winks, who has himself returned from injury this season, has nailed down a starting place in recent weeks and shone during the win against Real Madrid in midweek, resulting in a second successive England call-up.

But with a hectic festive schedule fast approaching, Spurs would prefer to have Wanyama fit and available.

With everybody fit, who should Spurs play in midfield?
