Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Sky Sports that the club must add more quality in order to fight for trophies.
After the disappointment of being dumped out of the Europa League with a 2-2 draw against Gent on Thursday, Tottenham bounced back in style with a thumping win over Stoke City this afternoon.
Harry Kane’s remarkable first half hat-trick set Spurs on their way, and Dele Alli added a fourth before the break as Tottenham coasted to a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are back up into second place in the Premier League table, and whilst a push for the Premier League title this season now looks beyond Spurs, fans will be hoping for a title challenge next term.
To do that though, Pochettino and Spurs must strengthen in the summer having failed to really add major quality to their side before the start of this season.
Goalkeeper Pau Lopez has yet to make a first-team appearance this season, midfielder Moussa Sissoko has been an expensive flop, winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou hasn’t started a league game and Vincent Janssen has yet to score a goal from open play following his move from AZ Alkmaar – though Victor Wanyama, bought from Southampton, has been excellent in midfield.
Tottenham’s first team is strong but their squad has been exposed at times this season, and Pochettino will no doubt be hoping for better fortunes in the market this time around, especially having chosen not to sign anybody in January.
Ahead of the summer transfer window, Pochettino has told Sky Sports that Tottenham ‘must add quality’ this summer in order to fight for trophies when asked about the club’s plans, and thinks that Spurs must work hard to find the ‘right profile’ of player that can play for the club.
“Always football is about quality. And being clever,” said Pochettino. “But it’s true. It’s always about improving. We must add quality to the team if we want to fight for big things. And we will try, like always in football.”
“Now is not the moment to start to talk. I think as always it’s our job as a club to find the right profile and player that can play for us,” he added.
