Mauricio Pochettino has told The Guardian that he did not plan to return to Tottenham Hotspur from Paris Saint-Germain.

Pochettino has said that he did not make any move to leave PSG for Spurs in the summer of 2021.

Mauricio Pochettino rumour

As reported by The Guardian, Spurs wanted to re-hire Pochettino in the summer of 2021.

Tottenham were looking for a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho at the time.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy eventually settled on Nuno.

However, Nuno was fired recently, and Antonio Conte is now the manager of the North London club.

The Guardian have claimed that Steve Hitchen, the technical performance director and Pochettino’s close friend, was looking at bringing the Argentine back to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Levy sacked the 49-year-old in November 2019.

What Mauricio Pochettino has said

Pochettino told The Guardian: “You never know from where these rumours appear and I am a person who doesn’t like to take advantage of these things. That’s why I didn’t talk.

“The people criticised me here in France, the media … ‘Why doesn’t Mauricio give his word about staying in Paris?’

“But when you don’t create things, why am I going to say something? I don’t need to clarify things. Of course, I listened to everything. But, yes … never happened, that.”

When asked if PSG triggered the one-year extension option to discourage Spurs, Pochettino said: “Haha, maybe. I don’t know. I didn’t ask the president and I didn’t ask Leonardo [the sporting director]. Maybe it was that.”

Could Mauricio Pochettino return to Tottenham?

Conte is in charge of Tottenham until the end of next season.

Pochettino’s contract at PSG also runs until the summer of 2023.

Coincidence?

Could Pochettino succeed Conte at Tottenham in 2023?

Anything is possible in football.

However, if Conte does well at Spurs, then it is very likely that Levy will extend his deal.

Tottenham fans love Pochettino, who must be enjoying himself in France.

After all, the Argentine is managing a PSG team that has Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
