The Portuguese suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are contenders for the Premier League title this season.
Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media during his pre-match press conference today, and responded when asked to give his option on Jose Mourinho’s comments suggesting that Tottenham are one of three sides who can win the Premier League title this season, as quoted by Football.London.
Spurs finished in fourth spot in the table last season, a distant 27 points adrift of eventual champions Manchester City, but Pochettino really bolstered his ranks during the summer transfer window.
And Tottenham now seem like the real deal. If they keep the likes of Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld beyond the end of this month, they will have every chance of winning their first top flight title since 1961.
Mourinho suggested on Sunday that Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs are the only three teams in with a real chance of winning the league this season, and Pochettino responded when asked what he thought of the former Manchester United manager’s comments, as quoted by Football.London:
“Wow. I love Mou. You know very well. He’s so clever and so sarcastic sometimes. That’s why he’s one of the best managers in the world and I respect his opinion. Of course I’m grateful because a manager like Mourinho believes we have the potential to be contenders. That’s important.”
Tottenham kicked off their season in fine fashion last weekend with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa, and they travel to the Etihad tomorrow to take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
And Spurs could make a real statement to the rest of the league by beating the champions. In truth, however, they would surely take a point if it was offered to them now.
