Mauricio Pochettino reacts to West Ham’s summer spending

West Ham United splashed the cash on new signings this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he isn’t surprised by West Ham United’s £100million transfer spending spree over the summer.

The international break has come to an end, and the Premier League returns this weekend, with a major London derby taking place on Saturday afternoon.

West Ham United play host to Tottenham Hotspur, with the Hammers looking to bounce back having lost 1-0 at home to Brighton and Hove Albion in their last game.

Spurs, on the other hand, beat Cardiff City 1-0 last time out, and are seeking some improved performances having scraped through some games this term.

Tottenham are down to a very thin squad due to a host of injuries, and their inability to sign any new players over the summer has been exacerbated by these absences.

West Ham, on the other hand, splashed the cash on the likes of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko, with their total transfer outlay over the summer reaching around £100million.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, Pochettino has been asked whether he is surprised that West Ham spent so much money when Spurs spent nothing – and he told Football.London that he isn’t surprised due to the money available in the Premier League and the desire for teams like West Ham to improve and get better.

“I am not surprised, in England you have teams like Fulham who spend more than West Ham, different types of club have the possibility to sign because it is so healthy, the financials in the Premier League,” said Pochettino. “When the club cab invest it is good for clubs. And the clubs that need to improve and want to improve and do better than last season, then they need to invest and add quality to their squad,” he added.

West Ham’s spending may not see them finish above Spurs, but the Daily Mail report that they did pip Spurs to a £22million deal for defender Issa Diop, and he should be in action against Tottenham this weekend, with Pochettino no doubt hoping that the French centre back doesn’t come back to haunt his side.
