Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Juan Foyth’s performance against Wolves

Tottenham Hotspur beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 on Saturday night.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he wants to see defender Juan Foyth learn from his mistakes against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night.

After going with Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez against Manchester City last Monday, Pochettino used Foyth against West Ham United alongside Sanchez on Wednesday, before bringing in Foyth for a first Premier League appearance against Wolves on Saturday, partnering Alderweireld.

The 2017 signing from Estudiantes has barely played for Spurs but starred against West Ham in the Carabao Cup, leaving many believing that he could make the step up to the Premier League with Sanchez rested and Jan Vertonghen still injured.

Spurs were 3-0 up with 25 minutes to play after goals from Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane, but in true Spurs fashion, they gave their fans something to stress about late on.

Foyth tripped Raul Jimenez inside the area for Ruben Neves to score from the penalty spot, before Foyth then hauled down Jonny for another penalty, with Jimenez scoring to give Wolves real hope – but Tottenham held on to win 3-2, with Sanchez coming on late in the day to solidify the Spurs defence.

Much will be made of Foyth giving away two penalties, but the Argentinian actually played well outside of those two moments, showing calmness and composure, not looking like a 20-year-old playing his first Premier League game.

After the final whistle, Pochettino was unsurprisingly asked about Foyth’s display, and he challenged his compatriot to learn from the mistakes ‘if he’s clever’, but felt that his performance on the whole was ‘very good’.

“I think he will learn from that.” said Pochettino. “It’s an action. In the second half they pushed a lot. If he’s clever then he’s going to learn from this. Yes of course, his debut, but I think his performance was very good. I am happy, but when you are a centre-back you can be involved and then it’s an action and then in the second half they pushed a lot, trying to turn the result. But of course that situation happened and I think he’s clever and he’s going to learn. But I’m happy, very happy. His performance was very good,” he added.
