Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he felt it was important for Fernando Llorente to score on Tuesday night against Swansea City.
Spurs travelled to South Wales to take on the Premier League’s bottom club on Tuesday night, having had a week off since their Boxing Day win over Southampton.
Pochettino’s men were expected to coast past the Swans, and whilst they had some scares at the Liberty Stadium, they did come away with a 2-0 victory.
Striker Fernando Llorente – signed from Swansea back in August – opened the scoring for Tottenham, heading home Christian Eriksen’s early free kick for the first goal.
Late in the day, Harry Kane’s raking pass picked out Dele Alli, and he made it 2-0 at the second attempt, giving Spurs a third straight Premier League win.
It was a particularly important night for Llorente, with the 32-year-old finally opening his Premier League account for Spurs, having failed to find the net in the top flight since his move from Swansea.
The Spaniard was brought into the side due to Kane’s illness, and he repaid Pochettino’s faith by scoring the opener and going close again as he looks to finally kickstart his Spurs career.
After the game, Pochettino has told Football.London that he felt it was important for Llorente to score, but also important for him to feel valued with a start, and believes he can build on this display.
“I think it was important for him to score, important for him to feel important and involved,” said Pochettino. “Always a player need that. In that situation if you score, even better, because as a striker you need that. It will be a fantastic motivation for him to keep going, working and waiting for his opportunity to play and help the team,” he added.
