The Tottenham Hotspur ace suffered an ankle knock late on against West Brom today.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media today in the aftermath of his side’s bitterly disappointing 1-0 defeat to West Brom, and provided an injury update on Jan Vertonghen, after the defender was substituted late on in the game, as quoted by Football.London.
Spurs’ defeat to the Baggies has left the door for the Champions League places wide open for Chelsea, and Antonio Conte’s side can close the gap on Pochettino’s men to just two points if they beat Liverpool at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.
The Lilywhites dominated the game from start to finish at the Hawthorns, but their total lack of any kind of cutting edge in the final third prevented them from leaving the Black Country with all three points.
Pochettino spoke to reporters today, and responded when asked to elaborate on the severity of the Belgium international’s injury, as quoted by Football.London:
“He twisted his ankle. We need to assess him tomorrow. We’ll see.”
Twisted ankles are often fairly serious injuries – something that Tottenham are only too aware of.
Harry Kane suffered a similar injury against Bournemouth in March, and subsequently missed the next three weeks whilst recovering from the problem.
Spurs fans will be hoping that Vertonghen’s injury is not as serious, and that he returns to action as soon as possible, as Pochettino’s men enter a crucial phase of their campaign.
