Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has spoken highly of Moussa Sissoko to The Independent.

Pochettino has also suggested that Sissoko was close to leave Tottenham in the summer of 2018.

The France international midfielder joined Spurs from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £30 million.

The 29-year-old could make just eight starts in the Premier League during the 2016-17 campaign and only 15 starts in the league last season, according to WhoScored.

Sissoko has played well for Tottenham in the Premier League in recent weeks, and Pochettino has praised the way the Frenchman has turned things around at the North London outfit.

Pochettino told The Independent about Sissoko: “There are moments and circumstances when you take decisions. But football is so dynamic. You need to take decisions in every single moment.

“But this has not only happened to him. There are many players in football who were close to going and then come in like this.

“But good thing can happen if you are a professional like Moussa and keep pushing and working hard.

“Sometimes when you feel the pain you keep your head up, keep pushing and keep working hard, that is the only way to get through it.”

Going strong

Tottenham are going strong in the Premier League and are very much in the race for the title race.

Spurs are only five points behind leaders Manchester City in fourth place and could also progress to the last-16 stage of the Champions League this season.

Tottenham will take on Chelsea at the Wembley Stadium in London in the Premier League after the two-week international break.
