Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen made his comeback in an FA Cup tie against Fulham.
Mauricio Pochettino has told Tottenham Hotspur’s official website that Jan Vertonghen deserves praise for returning to such a high level after injury.
Vertonghen damaged his ankle in Spurs’ match against West Bromwich Albion back in January, and has missed over a month’s worth of action.
However, the centre-back made his comeback in Pochettino’s side’s FA Cup match against Fulham over the weekend.
Tottenham kept a clean sheet at Craven Cottage, as they cruised into the quarter finals – with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick.
And Pochettino said: “When a player has an injury and works and focuses on trying to recover as soon as possible and shows they are professional, what happens is what has happened with Jan.
“He looks sharp, looks fit and deserves praise because he’s a great professional. He was good and we’re happy Jan is back with the group. It’s important all the players are fit.”
Vertonghen was in brilliant form before the injury, when he was playing in a three man defence at Spurs.
Tottenham have switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation in recent weeks, but Pochettino may now opt to go back to the 3-4-3 shape that served Spurs well when Vertonghen was fit enough to start.
Spurs are next in action on Thursday evening, when they take on Gent in the Europa League.
