Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane scored on his comeback game against Arsenal.

Mauricio Pochettino has told the Guardian that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has impressed him through his efforts in training.

Kane made his comeback for Tottenham against Arsenal in the North London derby yesterday.

The 23-year-old forward had been out for nine weeks with injury, but was selected to start.

And Pochettino insists that he did not take a risk by throwing Kane straight back into his Tottenham line-up, as the England international’s performances in training proved he was ready for a starting role.

“Why would it have been a gamble?” Pochettino said. “We are professional about that. We are not amateur. If we take a decision like that, we know it’s not a gamble. We assess it every day. Harry Kane had been working the last few weeks very hard on the training ground. When you decide to pick him, it’s because you believe he can do well.

“His return was important for us. He’d missed 11 games in those few months, and he’s our main striker and last season’s top scorer in the Premier League. So losing him was difficult.”

Kane has been badly missed by Spurs in his absence, with summer signing Vincent Janssen still struggling for goals.

Kane scored on his return to action for Tottenham, from the penalty spot, to ensure the Lilywhites kept up their unbeaten record.

Tottenham have avoided defeat in their last 11 Premier League matches, but they currently sit in fifth place.

Spurs are next in action after the international break, when they take on West Ham United at White Hart Lane.
