Tottenham Hotspur could have signed Marco Asensio back in 2014, according to reports.

AS Sport claim that Tottenham Hotspur are attempting to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid, just five years after Mauricio Pochettino originally had the chance to sign him.

Mundo Deportivo suggested that Tottenham were offered the chance to sign Asensio in Pochettino’s first year in charge at White Hart Lane.

However, on that occasion Spurs turned down the offer and the attacking midfielder went on to join Madrid.

Asensio has become regarded as one of the best up-and-coming prospects in Spain, and Tottenham are now back in the hunt for him.

The 23-year-old did not feature regularly for Madrid last term, offering hope to Tottenham that a deal could be done.

If Spurs are to sign Asensio this summer he would cost a considerable amount more than he would have done back in 2014.

And Pochettino may look back on that potential deal five years ago now, and regret not bringing the playmaker to Tottenham at an earlier date.
