Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has suggested to The Daily Mail that Eric Dier has a fight on his hands to get back into the team.

Dier, who can play as a defender or as a defensive midfielder, has struggled for form so far this season.

The 22-year-old was one of Tottenham’s best players last season, but the England international is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup at the moment.

Tottenham manager Pochettino has suggested that Dier, who has struggled with a hamstring injury, faces competition for his place.

The Argentine boss has stated that summer signing from Southampton, Victor Wanyama, and 20-year-old midfielder Harry Winks are competing with Dier.

“We’ll see what happens but football is about 25 [players],” Pochettino told The Daily Mail about Dier. “Maybe last season there was only him, this season we want to improve our squad. It’s not a problem.

“Now the players need to feel the competition. There is Wanyama in his position too. And don’t forget Harry Winks too, who is coming and pushing a lot from behind. You have to look forward and carry on working.”

Dier is a very good and talented young footballer, and despite his struggles so far this season, fans should have faith in him.

Increase in competition for places in midfield is only going to make Spurs better and stronger.

Tottenham are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 17 points from seven matches, just a point behind leaders Manchester City.

The North London outfit will take on West Bromwich Albion away from home at The Hawthorns in the league on Saturday afternoon.
