Mauricio Pochettino will have Tottenham Hotspur fans sweating after commenting on Liverpool’s decision to sell Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian wizard completed a huge £142 million move from Liverpool to Barcelona at the weekend, a move which can only be good for Tottenham given it weakens their closest rivals for a Champions League place.

Coutinho has publicly stated it was his lifelong dream to one day play for Barca and in a statement issued after the completion of the transfer Liverpool said they tried everything but had to allow the player to realise a dream.

And in the wake of the second biggest transfer in football history, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has left his supporters sweating with his comments on the deal.

Speaking on Sky Sports Pochettino said Liverpool had ‘no choice’ but to sell Coutinho… on the same day superstar Harry Kane revealed he is happy to stay at Tottenham ‘IF’ they start winning trophies.

“Liverpool is one of the best clubs (in terms of) history in the world and look when Coutinho, or some players like Coutinho, want to leave how difficult it is to keep your best player,” Pochettino told Sky Sports.

“I look at what happened with Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester, (Zinedine) Zidane in Juventus, (Luis) Figo in Barcelona, it’s a lot of examples that it’s so, so, so tough for everyone to keep your best player if your player in some moment turn the mind and say now ‘I want to leave’.”

Pochettino’s comments will worry some Spurs fans given the huge interest in Kane from some of the world’s leading clubs.

The North Londoners have established themselves as a top club at home and abroad under Pochettino.

But they face a real fight to get into the Champions League next season which would surely see speculation over Kane reach new levels.

As reported by The Guardian, the striker said: “I’ve always said, just keep progressing, keep getting better. We want to start winning trophies so that’s the aim. As long as the club keeps doing that then I’m happy here.”

But could Pochettino’s comments be the first sign of a realisation from the manager that he may not be able to keep hold of his talisman if Spurs’ trophy drought continues?
