Tottenham Hotspur thumped Mike Phelan’s side on Wednesday night.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told the club’s official website that he and his staff deserved the humble pie dished out by Victor Wanyama last night.
Spurs thumped Hull City 3-0 at White Hart Lane to stay fifth in the Premier League and three points behind Manchester City in fourth spot.
Two goals from Christian Eriksen helped Tottenham into a 2-0 lead, before Wanyama tapped home a third on 78 minutes to seal the victory.
The Kenyan’s goal came a matter of days after he missed a gilt-edged header in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester United.
Consequently, the former Southampton midfielder ran straight to the home dugout last night to gloat about his goal, and Pochettino admits he and his colleagues had it coming after “killing” the player with banter following his miss at Old Trafford.
He said: “Yes, in a funny way we’ve killed him a little bit, but in the same way we said ‘okay, in the next game you must score, you need to score.
“He came to the bench with Jesus, Toni and Miguel and it’s important for the player. It was funny and I’m happy, the third goal helped us to be more comfortable in the game and end with a good feeling.”
It was a fine win for Pochettino’s side and they look to be hitting form at just the right time.
Spurs, who have won their last three home games in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals in the process, host Burnley in North London this weekend and you’d expect another victory there.
After that, they face a couple of tricky visits to Southampton and Watford to end the calendar year, by which stage the Tottenham boss will hope his side have entered the top four.
