Tottenham Hotspur will take on Newcastle United in their season opener in 10 days time.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino spoke to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s 1-0 friendly win over AC Milan in Minneapolis last night, and hinted that he will not be scared to start Luke Amos against Newcastle for their season opener next Saturday, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Spurs fans are becoming increasingly more frustrated with their club’s lack of transfer activity so far this summer, and Pochettino will surely be keen to bolster his options, especially with Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko suffering injuries which saw them fly home early from the club’s US tour.
There is also the small matter of Mousa Dembele’s uncertain future in north London.
Amos, 21, has impressed during Tottenham’s pre-season, however, and with the midfield crisis, he could very well be called upon against Newcastle in 10 days time – something that Pochettino insists he will not be afraid to do, as quoted by the Daily Mail:
“I’m in my fifth year, do you think I am going to be scared to play him? The young players maybe don’t have experience because they are young – the compensation is desire and energy. Players like Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, when they were young, showed desire and energy like the young players on the tour. I think you know very well if I believe in someone younger I don’t care about experience or not. Football is about energy – respecting yourself, your team-mates, the team, being professional.”
Many expect Tottenham to mount a sustained challenge for the Premier League title this season, and if they are to do just that, Pochettino will surely have to do more than just rely on the club’s youth, and bring in some genuine experienced quality though the doors at White Hart Lane before transfer deadline day on August 9th.
