The Argentine hails the Tottenham Hotspur youngster.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has admitted to ESPN that Marcus Edwards is a “very talented player”, but the Argentine stressed the need to protect the teenager from being hyped.
The 17-year-old offering a glimpse into his undoubted potential with a glittering cameo in Tottenham’s 2-1 friendly defeat by Juventus in Australia this afternoon.
With Spurs conceding twice within the opening 15 minutes, and new signings Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen failing to make much of an impact, Edwards’s half-an-hour was a rare positive on an otherwise disappointing day for the Lilywhites.
The attacking midfielder seems very highly regarded in North London and although Pochettino admits he’s a special talent, the Argentine urged caution over his development by reminding a press conference of his age.
“It’s fair to pay attention to Marcus Edwards because he’s a very talented player but we have to be careful with all the young players,” he told ESPN.
“He’s only 17 years old – we need to care for him in a very good way.”
Edwards is certainly a major talent and the teenager netted seven times in 19 Under-18 outings for Tottenham last season.
His promise is reflected in the fact he looked unfazed against the Italian giants, but it must be noted that he remains very young and there is plenty of work still to be done if he is to make it with Spurs.
