Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has explained to ESPN why Tom Carroll left the club in the summer transfer window.
Carroll left Tottenham for Premier League rivals Swansea City in the January transfer window for a fee reported by ESPN to be worth £4.5 million.
The 24-year-old midfielder struggled to get regular playing time in the Premier League under Pochettino, but he has established himself as an important player for Swansea.
The former England Under-21 international has created 11 chances in nine Premier League appearances for the Swans so far this season.
Pochettino has explained the decision to let Carroll leave in the January transfer window.
“Every player is different and he wanted to play more, he needed to feel important and I think Swansea promised and provided that a lot,” Pochettino told ESPN.
“It was his decision with our decision. He was a very good professional, a very good player with us but we couldn’t promise he would play every game. For him it was the right time to move.
“It’s very clear he was a player with a lot of quality in the Premier League and he’s fit in easily there and is very consistent. We are happy for him because he is a very nice guy.”
Carroll is a good player, and he needed to leave Tottenham in order to have a successful career.
There was no point in the 24-year-old staying at White Hart Lane and not getting enough competitive football.
Swansea are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment, and Carroll will be determined to make sure that the Swans retain their top-flight status for the 2017-18 campaign.
