The 21-year-old midfielder’s goal in the 65th minute proved to be the difference between the Premier League club and the Championship outfit in the third round of the EFL Cup.
The England international, who is one of the best young players in the world, celebrated his goal by raising his hands to his ears.
Tottenham manager Pochettino has said that Alli’s gesture was not directed at the fans, but was a gesture to a friend who was at the game.
“That was a situation that was a gesture to a friend, someone in the stand,” Pochettino told Football.London when asked about his celebration.
When asked if it was directed to the fans, the Spurs boss said: “No, why? It’s nothing related with us, the fans, nothing. It was only a joke with one friend in the stand. That is true, I believe it because yesterday he told me.
“I didn’t know. And now we [he and his assistant Jesus Perez] were talking with our press officer and he said he asked him and he said it was to one friend. I think that’s the truth.”
Alli has scored two goals in five Premier League appearances for Tottenham so far this season.
During the 2016-17 campaign, the England international scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 35 league starts for Spurs.
Tottenham are fifth in the Premier League table at the moment with eight points from five matches, five points behind leaders Manchester City and Manchester United.
