Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he will be rotating his side to play against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup tomorrow evening.

Pochettino is eager to give some of his key players a rest, as he relies on his fringe stars to have enough quality to get past their Championship opponents.

Tottenham are yet to play a match in this year’s League Cup competition, and Pochettino’s comments suggest that it is not a major priority for the Lilywhites.

The Argentine boss said: “Yes, for different reasons I will rotate the team. But in the end it’s Tottenham that is going to play, like in different competitions.

“Maybe to give the possibility to play for a player that doesn’t play too much I think it’s a good possibility to see them and try to give the possibility to maybe fight to be in the starting XI more regularly.”

Harry Kane and Dele Alli could be among the players rested by Spurs, as Pochettino looks to keep his main stars fresh for the campaign ahead.

If Kane is kept on the substitutes’ bench then Fernando Llorente is likely to make his first Spurs start.

And when asked whether Llorente would be involved tomorrow, Pochettino said: “Maybe he is going to play tomorrow or maybe he’s going to play in the starting XI. It was a difficult pre-season for him as he broke his arm and he needs to play to be fit.”

Llorente joined Spurs from Swansea during the summer transfer window, but he has been used sparingly so far, with all his appearances coming as a substitute.

Spurs reached the fourth round of the League Cup last term, before being knocked out by Liverpool.
