The Tottenham Hotspur defender really struggled against Burnley on Saturday.
Tottenham were quite simply not good enough against Burnley on Saturday, eventually losing the game 2-1, in a result that severely dented their hopes of winning the Premier League title this season.
There will once again be questions asked of the Spurs players’ mentality, but Mauricio Pochettino should not be immune to criticism too.
The Argentine does, after-all, pick the team, and it could be argued that he dropped an absolute clanger at Turf Moor on Saturday by starting Juan Foyth ahead of Davinson Sanchez.
Burnley away was quite simply a game that Tottenham had to win, yet according to Football.London, Pochettino chose to leave Sanchez at home because of the hectic fixture schedule ahead.
And against a team with the Clarets’ physicality, Spurs really did miss the Colombian.
Foyth, who stepped in for Sanchez, looked out of his depth until he was subbed off in the 76th minute. He was bullied by Burnley’s front two of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood, and he ended up looking like a fish out of water.
The 21-year-old joined Tottenham from Estudiantes in the summer of 2017, for around £8 million, and he has gone on to make just seven Premier League starts for Pochettino’s side.
And after his display at Turf Moor it’s little wonder as to why.
Foyth is a good young player, but as things stand, he is quite clearly nowhere near the level that is needed, and Tottenham boss must take full responsibility for throwing him into a game of such magnitude on Saturday.
