Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that people were wrong about his stance on transfers last summer.

Spurs shattered their transfer record this summer by signing Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, a move which many feel has proven Tottenham are now fully acting like a ‘big’ club.

It wasn’t Ndombele who ended Tottenham’s signing drought though, as Leeds winger Jack Clarke ended a run of over 500 days without a new signing before being loaned back to the Whites.

There is still work for Pochettino to do in the transfer market, but fans are understandably excited about the arrival of French international Ndombele.

Some were stunned that chairman Daniel Levy sanctioned such a big money deal, both in terms of the transfer fee and the wages involved.

Now though, Pochettino has discussed the situation, noting that people need to realise that Tottenham were spending their funds on their new stadium.

Pochettino now feels Tottenham are ‘free’ in the transfer market, believing that people got his stance completely wrong last summer, claiming he didn’t want to make signings when that wasn’t the case.

Pochettino also added that he has told Levy to find a middle ground between football and business in the transfer market, which would sum up why the deal for Ndombele went through, as it made sense both on and off the pitch.

“I told Daniel to mix between football and business, it’s so important to him is to see how he is going to help us to have the best squad,” said Pochettino. “But of course, as I said before, I am going to be happy with the team we are going to finish with at the end of the transfer market. He is in charge to do the best for the club. I am going to be focused and spend my energy on managing and coaching in the best possible way the squad I am going to have in my hands. I am always going to back what Daniel is going to do. Of course, I have contract with Tottenham and when I signed my contract I accepted all the conditions.”

“In the last five years the reality is that he was great at building a fantastic training ground, fantastic stadium. The problem sometimes is explaining the real situation to outside. Last year, in the same situation as today, they say we have money but Pochettino does not want to sign. It’s not like this. We wanted to sign the right players. Now this season I think the club is going to be free,” he added.
