Ben Davies could miss Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid next week.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that he doubts whether Ben Davies will be fit enough to face Real Madrid in the Champions League clash on Tuesday night.
Davies has been one of the most consistent performers for Spurs this season, and has gradually developed into a key player for Pochettino.
The 24-year-old left-back missed Spurs’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday in the Premier League through illness, and Pochettino is concerned that he may not recover in time to face Madrid.
“It’s difficult. I don’t believe so. I hope that he can be involved again as soon as possible, but we need to assess him. But I am not so positive. I hope that I am wrong and tomorrow he can train with us,” said Pochettino, as quoted by Football London.
Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen played on the left hand side against Bournemouth, and he could be asked to perform a similar task against Madrid as well.
Vertonghen has previously played as a left-back for Spurs, but being primarily a central defender, he doesn’t provide enough threat going forward.
Pochettino could be tempted to use young Kyle Walker-Peters on the right hand side, and use Kieran Trippier on the left.
However, Spurs will be looking to keep things tight against the European champions at Bernabeu, and therefore, Vertonghen playing on the left makes more sense.
