Are Tottenham Hotspur in danger of losing star defender Toby Alderweireld?

Toby Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and is a key player in the current Tottenham Hotspur team.

The Belgium international defender is at his peak at the age of 28, and Spurs fans can expect him to be on top of his game for a few more years.

Tottenham supporters would also like the former Ajax star to remain part of the team in the long term and sign a new contract, having joined the club from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £11.5 million.

The Belgium international’s current contract with the North London outfit runs until June 2020, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, but talks over a new deal have been going for a while.

Toby Alderweireld #4 of Tottenham Hotspur passes the ball in the second half against Roma during the International Champions Cup on July 25, 2017 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

The Daily Mail has claimed that an agreement over fresh terms has yet to be reached between the two parties, although both Spurs and Alderweireld are reported to be willing to strike a deal.

Given that Spurs have recently lost Kyle Walker to Premier League rivals Manchester City, many fans will be worried about the long-term future of Alderweireld.

No, no one is suggestion that the 28-year-old will leave Tottenham this summer, but what about next summer?

Mauricio Pochettino, manager of Spurs looks on prior to the Pre-Season Friendly match beween Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus at Wembley Stadium on August 5, 2017 in London, England.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, though, does not seem to be too fussed about the situation.

“Toby is like other players,” Pochettino told Football.London when asked for any news on a new contract for Alderweireld. “They have contracts.

“They signed their contracts and they were so happy when they signed their contracts. He still has a three-year contract. I explain the situation but it’s another rumour in the media.”
