Tottenham Hotspur is confident that Toby Alderweireld will sign a new contract.
Mauricio Pochettino has delivered words of comfort to Tottenham Hotspur fans by saying that Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld is happy with his contract situation.
The Belgian centre-back is a key player for Spurs, and is arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
And solving Alderweireld’s contract situation is one of Pochettino’s primary objectives at the moment.
The 28-year-old has a contract till 2020 and pockets around £75,000-per-week, according to Daily Star, but he wants to be among the top earners at the club.
Last week, Alderweireld’s advisor Stijn Francis has said that the Belgian’s statistics are impressive, and if Spurs cannot offer him a new contract, they should let him go.
Spurs have signed Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez for a record deal of £35 million to provide competition for the first-team places.
However, Pochettino has confirmed that there’s nothing to panic about Alderweireld’s situation.
He has said that the Belgian is relaxed and is fully committed to the club. He has added that Alderweireld is happy with his contract, and there’s no reason for him to move.
“He was talking with me in my office this morning and he’s so happy, he wants to make it clear he is fully committed with the club,” said Pochettino, as quoted by The Mirror.
“He’s happy with his contract, two years plus one. It’s not an issue. I recognise some rumours in the last few days.
“But he is so relaxed, so calm. His idea is to try to play here — he’s happy here, there’s no reason to move.”
