Marcus Edwards’s Tottenham Hotspur future is reportedly up in the air.
The Guardian reported earlier this month that Marcus Edwards wanted to leave Tottenham Hotspur.
The 19-year-old’s future in North London has been doubted in recent weeks, with The Evening Standard reporting that Tottenham could axe him.
It would be such a disappointing end for a player who once promised so much and yet delivered so little.
Edwards, yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs, only managed six minutes of football for Championship side Norwich City during his loan at Carrow Road in the second half of last season.
There is a ways to go before the youngster comes even close to fulfilling the potential that he certainly has, which in turn means that Mauricio Pochettino’s comments about him in 2016 now look completely wrong.
Less than two years ago, Pochettino, speaking to Sky Sports, compared Edwards to a young Lionel Messi, but it’s safe to say that the Lilywhites youngster is a million miles from the Argentine superstar for now.
It isn’t strictly Pochettino’s fault that Edwards’s Tottenham career hangs in the balance, because the former Southampton boss has touched on certain “behaviour issues” in the past, but comparisons to perhaps football’s best-ever player hardly did the young man any favours.
At 17, did he really need the comparison? Probably not.
The North Londoners have plenty more potential gems in the academy, and maybe the Tottenham manager should be wary about giving them a near-impossible standard to reach, as he arguably did with Edwards.
