Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that he had faith in Danny Rose from the moment he arrived at Spurs, in an interview with the club’s official website.

Rose was the first player to meet the Argentine upon his arrival and has revealed that his manager assured him he would become an England international if he followed his instructions.

Pochettino backed up these claims and suggested that he has not been surprised by the drastic improvement of the 26-year old in recent years.

“It’s true, it was my first meeting with a Tottenham player at the training ground,” said the Spurs boss. “From day one, I trusted in him.

“Danny is a very good player and how he’s improved in the last couple of seasons is fantastic.

“It’s down to him, because he’s always open to work and trying to improve, and the player is always the key in this situation. He deserves all the credit.”

Rose divided fans in his early years at the club and was considered something of a liability after several high-profile errors.

A season-long loan move to Sunderland in the 2012-2013 campaign was the making of the energetic full-back, and he returned to London determined to become first-choice for Tottenham.

He has done exactly that and along with his right-sided counterpart, Kyle Walker, has established himself as the national team’s primary choice.

Pochettino’s system requires two, pacey attacking full-backs to provide width and the physical attributes of Rose and Walker are the reason they are in the first-team ahead of Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier.

There has been undoubted technical improvement in both players too and Spurs can be grateful to Pochettino that they now boast arguably the best full-back duo in the Premier League.
