Vincent Janssen has failed to score for Tottenham Hotspur in the opening few weeks of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino has told Sky Sports that the door has opened for Tottenham Hotspur, after Harry Kane’s injury.
Kane is expected to miss the next eight weeks’ worth of action, after damaging his ankle in Spurs’ latest match against Sunderland.
The England striker’s absence is a major blow for Spurs, but Pochettino has backed Janssen to make the step up.
“Janssen has already shown the supporters he has a big passion to play, they have been excited to see him on the pitch and the energy he brings,” Pochettino said.
“It’s true this is a big opportunity for him to confirm all that we expect from him and he has to be ready – now that Harry is injured, it is true it has opened the door for him to play more.”
Janssen is widely expected to start for Tottenham against Gillingham in the EFL Cup later this evening.
Spurs are the heavy favourites to win the tie, and the pressure will be on Janssen.
The Dutch international is yet to score for Spurs, after signing from AZ Alkmaar in the summer.
Janssen has made six appearances for Spurs to date, but most of his displays have been as a substitute, with Kane continuing to be Pochettino’s first choice striker.
