Mauricio Pochettino has shared his thoughts on Tottenham’s Champions League draw, in quotes published by the club’s official website.

Spurs return to Europe’s premier competition this season for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign and managed to avoid the big guns in yesterday’s draw.

Pochettino assessed the qualities of each group opponent in his interview with Spurs TV.

On CSKA Moscow:

“We know very well that Russia is always difficult and CSKA are sure to have a very good team. For now though, we need to learn about the team and to have more information. It’s true that in Russia it’s a tough competition and I’m sure they will be a very tough team. We’ll see what happens.”

On Bayer Leverkusen:

“The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world and all the teams are very competitive. Last season we played Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League and we can see how competitive German teams are. Bayer Leverkusen will be tough as well.”

On Monaco:

“We know Monaco well. There have been some changes there but the same manager (since we played them last year). Again, it’s tough. It’s the Champions League and it will always be a tough competition.”

The Lilywhites were faced with possible nightmare groups after being placed in Pot 3 but they will now feel confident of progressing into the last 16.

Away trips to Russia are always a challenge but Spurs have more than enough to match all three of their opponents both home and away in the coming months.

The real test of Pochettino’s squad will be in how they balance crucial Champions League fixtures with a desire to compete for the Premier League.

Spurs participated in the Europa League last season but largely used a second-string team so the issue of fatigue was never a major factor.

They will not be afforded the same luxury in the Champions League however, and will need to call upon their strongest XI in every fixture if they are to enjoy a successful campaign.
